Incident number #701 details:
Hijacker shot after bullets barely miss girl
By Dasen Thathiah
An off-duty police officer shot and killed a suspected hijacker late last night, after bullets whizzed past his sleeping daughter near Overport.
The National Intervention Unit (NIU) member had been parked on Randles Road near the N3 onramp at about 11.15pm on Sunday night, when two armed men fired several rounds in the direction of his car, according to a police source.
The man's four-year-old daughter had been asleep in the passenger seat, which was fortunately reclined.
At least four shots penetrated the body and windows of the Toyota Corolla, narrowly missing the little girl, as the men raced towards the car.
The officer apparently shot back at his attackers, killing one, while the other fled.
He called for back-up to locate the second man.
Members of the Cato Manor Crime Prevention Unit and Mayville SAPS responded within minutes and found the suspected hijacker's body lying next to the pavement, with a handgun reportedly wedged underneath him.
There was no trace of the second attacker, said an officer at the scene.
Wearing faded blue jeans and a white jacket, the dead man appeared to be in his mid-twenties.
"The suspect was wearing a glove on his right hand, presumably to prevent him from being identified by his fingerprints or to prevent gunpowder residue from settling on his skin," said the source.
He added that the traumatised child had been promptly fetched by a relative of the officer.
Police are investigating a case of attempted hijacking and are trying to locate the second suspect.
