Incident number #703 details:
Irate customer drives through shop window

A Cape Town store manager narrowly escaped injury when an "irate customer" drove his car through a shop window on Saturday afternoon, paramedics said.

"... it is believed that a man in his early 60s apparently became argumentative after buying beer at a store in the centre," said Netcare 911 spokeswoman Lauren Copley.

"Minutes later, after leaving the store, he drove his Golf through the front glass door of the store, narrowly missing the female manager who was standing at the entrance."

The impact completely shattered the frame and glass of the 4m-by-4m door, at the shop in the Aroma shopping centre in Van Riebeeck road, Kuilsrivier at around 3.30pm.

"The man's five-year old granddaughter was apparently sitting in the front passenger seat."

She was not hurt, said Copley.

The 38-year old store employee sustained lacerations to her right leg.

She was "very lucky not to have been more seriously injured", said paramedics at the scene. The woman was taken to Netcare Kuilsrivier hospital.

Police said they had arrested the 68-year-old man on charges of driving under the influence of liquor.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk said the man was being held in the Kuilsrivier police cells. - Sapa
